High School Classes

 

Physical Science

Grades: 9th -12th

Class Limit: 6-12                                                                                

Day/Time: Monday/Thursday—12:00-1:15 p.m.

Tuition: $150 semester —full year course—16 weeks/semester

Supply fee:  $25/semester

Prerequisite: Current enrollment in Algebra I or having completed Algebra I

Textbook: Bob Jones Physical Science (4th edition), Student text and lab manual

 

Students will learn the basics and introduction of Chemistry and Physics. Students will cover topics such as basic chemistry, metric measurements, basic unit analysis, speed/acceleration, light, sound, simple machines, electronics, and more. This class will include labs. Supply fee includes materials for labs, handouts, and all basic materials needed in class. Students will be expected to take notes on lectures, take in-class tests and do weekly homework assignments. 

 

Biology

Grades:  10th-12th            

Class Limit: 6-12                                                                                

Tuition: $175  semester – full year course – 16 weeks/semester

Time: Monday/Thursday  1:30-2:45 p.m.

Students will gain a basic understanding of the living parts of God’s creation and how they function.  Students will cover topics such as the chemistry of life, cells and processes, genetics, classification of plants and organisms and human anatomy and physiology, and processes of human body.  Students will participate in science through labs (including dissections), discussions, videos, observation exercises. Students will be expected to take notes on lectures, take in-class tests and do weekly homework assignments. 

 

Worldviews In FOCUS

Age:  10th-12th grade

Time: Monday, 10-11:45am

Tuition: $100 per semester—full year course—16 weeks/semester

Supply Fee: $10 per semester

Textbook: This course will be taught using a wide variety of curriculums including: Focus on the Family’s TRUTH Project, Understanding the Times, Thinking like a Christian, and Countering Culture by David Noebel, Engaging Popular Culture: Worldviews in Movies &Music DVDs by Chuck Edwards and much more!

 

You will need to purchase:

1st semester: Thinking Like a Christian: Understanding and Living in a Biblical Worldview

2nd semester: Countering Culture: Arming Yourself to Confront Non-biblical Worldviews

Each student will also be required to have a 2-3”, 3 ring binder and a set of tab dividers.

 

Description:  Modern society is relentlessly bombarded with ideas, world views, and opinions

which are offered as ideal solutions for the pressing problems of our day. But at the core, many of them are anti-Christian – and frequently we are not even aware of it.  This course will be a combination of direct teaching, activity, discussion, video clips, Scripture investigation, along with  projects that might include interviewing people in regard to the week’s topic, doing research, oral reports, family discussions, or other such activities.

The goal of this class is as follows:

To establish students in the foundation of the Christian Worldview; learning to think Biblically.

To show students how to apply a Biblical worldview to every area of their lives,

To teach students how to defend the Christian worldview against non-Christian world views and   

cultural issues that are competing for their hearts and minds. 

This course can be listed on your student’s transcript as either Philosophy or Social Studies.

 

Book Discussion2

Description
: Reading Great Literature sharpens the mind, quickens the heart, and causes one to think beyond their world. It will be our aim to ponder, discuss, present and apply what we learn to real life. Emphasis of this class will be on critical thinking and the message of the work rather than vocabulary or chapter questions. An assignment will be emailed one month prior to each discussion and will need to be completed before class. We will be covering 6 complete works, three each semester. Included this year will be To Kill a Mockingbird, The Chosen, and The Screwtape Letters.

 

High School Composition

Age:  10th-12th grade

Time:  Thursday, 10:30-11:45 a.m.—full year course—16 week semesters

Tuition: $100 semester—full year course—16 week/ semester

Supply fee: $10 per semester--—full year course—16 week semesters

Prerequisite:   None (the previous Composition class from 2008-2009 would be helpful)

Textbook:  Simon and Schuster Handbook for Writers (8th ed) by Troyka and Hesse (if purchased for composition in 2008-09, you do not need to purchase a textbook)

 

High school composition offers the 10th-12th grader a wide variety of opportunities to experience and write different types of material.  The class will focus on continued use of the 5 paragraph essay format first semester--critical analysis, definition, process writing, writing for a cause, editorial, expository, descriptive, and narrative styles will be introduced.  We will be writing 5-6 formal essays first semester.  Second semester we will begin analyzing literature using the book discussion book, The Chosen.  Students will be reading the book during the month that it is covered in book discussion and will be writing various papers discussing the theme, character analysis and other literary elements. Students will also participate in enjoyable activities such as movies review and analyzing song lyrics. In preparation for taking the SAT, vocabulary exercises and tests will be given.  Timed writing will also be an integral part of class period during both semesters in order to prepare them for college writing exams.  MLA format will be used on all essays and research papers.  APA format will be introduced.

 

High School Greek

Age: 9th-12th

Time:  9:00-10:15  a.m.--Thursday

Tuition: $80.00 per semester—full year course—16 weeks/semester

Prerequisite: None

Text: Required:  Basics of Biblical Greek by William D. Mounce - Grammar (text) and Workbook Strong's Concordance

Not required, but strongly recommended:   Basics of Biblical Greek Survival Kit by Mounce (Vocab CD, flash cards for the entire course, fold out notebook chart of all inflections, grammar patterns, etc.)

Description: This will be a one-year Biblical (Koine) Greek class that will focus on the alphabet, grammar, structure, and vocabulary of Biblical Greek as well as scripture translation.  Koine Greek is the original language of the New Testament, as well as of the Septuagint translation of the Old Testament.  Students should have a decent grasp of English grammar, but prior foreign language experience is not necessary.  Students will gradually build vocabulary, grammar, and translation helps and resources throughout the year that may be used in future Bible and language studies.  Emphasis will be placed on using skills learned both in writing and in Bible study/translation work.  A final test will be given first semester, while a translation piece will be given at the end of second semester. 

 

High School Latin 2

Age: 9th-12th

Time:  12:00-1:15-- Mondays and Thursdays

Tuition: $120.00 per semester—full year course—16 weeks/semester

Prerequisite: HS Latin 1

Text: Strong’s Concordance, Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words by W.E. Vine and Merrill F. Unger (both available at Mardel), Oxford Latin Dictionary, Pocket or Desk size

 

Description: This is a continuation course from HS Latin 1.  Students will continue to build on their knowledge of Latin vocabulary, grammar, conversation, translation, and historical and cultural relevance.  As the students will have a greater vocabulary and knowledge of Latin syntax and grammar, more emphasis will be placed on translation work (mostly out of the Latin Vulgate, but some work will also come from excerpts of Caesar’s Gallic Wars, provided by instructor).  Students will also continue to build their helps and resources for use in translation and daily work.  A final will be given each semester, consisting of a larger translation and analysis/reaction paper.

 

HS Art

Grades: 9-12th

Class Limit: 15

Class Fee: $90 semester – full year course – 16 weeks/semester

Time: Thursdays—9:00-10:15 a.m.

Prerequisite:  None

 

Students will gain familiarity with different mediums of art including but not limited to watercolor, oil pastels, pencil drawing, colored pencil, marker, one and two point perspectives, tempera, and 3-d design, clay, paper mache. Students will learn the elements and principles of art through hands on art projects. Students will have one homework assignment per week for practice and reinforcement in addition to completing any class work.  High School projects are more open ended than the other classes.  I will alternate difficult projects with more fun type projects.

 

Drama I

Age:  6th-12th grade

Time: Monday—12:00-1:15 p.m.

Tuition:  $100 per semester—full year course—16 week semesters

Prerequisite:  none

Textbook:  None

 

We will learn about everything from projecting and enunciating, getting over stage fright, loosening up and letting yourself go. We will touch a bit on theater history, basics of improv, comedy, technical theater and acting. In the second semester, the kids will get in small groups and do a service project, writing a play and performing for nursing homes or libraries.

This class goes far beyond “just drama” and brings out amazing things in kids.

 

Drama 2

Age:  6th-12th grade

Time: Monday—1:30-2:45 p.m.

Tuition:  $100 per semester—full year course—16 week semesters

Supply fee: none

Prerequisite:  Must have Drama I or have taken additional drama class elsewhere

Textbook:  None

 

We'll write and produce a Christmas play, learn about some of the more technical aspects of theater, makeup effects, musical theater, voice and develop projects together as a class.

 

Middle School

 

Paragraph Writing

Age:  7th-9th grade

Time: Thursday, 9-9:50am

Tuition: $90 per semester—full year course—16 weeks/semester

Supply Fee:  $10 per semester

Textbook: This course will be taught using a wide variety of curriculums.

Writing for 100 Days, by Arquilevich, and Writeshop will be the main framework.

There will be no text book to purchase for this class:

However, we will be compiling a notebook of instruction as we go; including word banks,

sample paragraphs, evaluation forms, as well as a portfolio of their writing.

Each student will be required to have a 2”, 3 ring binder and a set of tab dividers.

 

Description: The goal of this course is to provide students with the tools and desire to become good writers! Though an introduction to writing for students who have not had much experience, it will also provide an environment for writing development and improvement. Instruction will begin with word choice: learning to avoid clichés, practicing a variety of sentence structures, and finally creating meaningful paragraphs including descriptive and informative paragraphs as well as first-and third-person narratives. Students will practice important techniques of style and self-editing while grammar, though important, will not be emphasized.  Expect plenty of interaction in the classroom, including group projects, discussion, and activities. Daily assignments will be required at home to support lessons taught each week. Though carefully structured, this class will be flexible enough to meet the needs of every learning style and challenge.

 

 Book Discussion 1

Textbook:  no textbook…list of books will be available at co-op registration.  Students will be required to have a notebook with 6 dividers (one divider for each book)

 

Description:  The goal of this class is to introduce 7th-9th graders to quality literary works.  Students will read three books each semester for a total of 6 books for the year.  Students will participate in hands-on activities, discussion and homework activities to explore literary elements of plot, characterization, theme, setting, etc.  Students will analyze each book and be able to explain literary elements for each book.  Students will keep a notebook with dividers which will hold all homework and classroom assignments.  This class will meet all learning styles and challenges.  Some of the books that will be read during the class are Our Town, Miracles on Maple Hill, Cheaper by the Dozen,  and I Am David.  (complete list available at registration)

 

Middle School Latin II

Age:  6th-9th grade

Time:  11:00-11:50.--Thursday

Tuition: $60.00 per semester—full year course—16 weeks/semester

Text: Latin for Children, Primer B (Activity Book B highly recommended, but optional)

Prerequisite: Middle School Latin I or instructor approval

 

Description: This is a continuation course from Middle School Latin I.  We will work through a 32-week text that gently but thoroughly brings students to a deeper understanding of Latin vocabulary, grammar, English derivatives, and basic translation.  The text includes daily practice, fun chants and games for repetition, and age-appropriate lesson practice.  We will also introduce Biblical and church history as it applies to the lessons.

 

Primer B is the second of three years available through Latin for Children.  2-3 years of this curriculum will effectively prepare students for high school level language study.

 

MS Art

Grades: 6-8

Class Limit: 12

Prerequisite: none

Students will study the animal kingdom-- reptiles, snakes, lizards, turtles and crocodiles.  Heat and energy will also be studied—mechanical, chemical and nuclear energy; electricity, and magnetism are all topics that will be covered throughout the year.  Moms will sign up for the topic and date(s) they wish to teach at registration.

Students will explore various mediums in art and some traditional crafts of other cultures. They will weave, water color, draw, paint, make scratch art, prints, finger paint, make recyclable art, and basically have fun.  They will work with watercolors, chalk, oil pastels, tempera, finger paint, collage, work with colored pencils and get introduced to various artists and their major works.  Some basic drawing techniques will be taught as well.
