English Classes


Paragraph Writing
Age: 7th-9th grade
Time: Thursday, 10:00-10:50 a.m.
Tuition: $90 per semester—full year course—16 weeks/semester
Supply Fee: $10 per semester
Textbook: This course will be taught using a wide variety of curriculums.
Writing for 100 Days, by Arquilevich, and many others.
There will be no text book to purchase for this class:
However, we will be compiling a notebook of instruction as we go; including word banks,
sample paragraphs, evaluation forms, as well as a portfolio of their writing.
Each student will be required to have a 2”, 3 ring binder and a set of tab dividers.
Description: The goal of this course is to provide students with the tools and desire to become good writers!
Though an introduction to writing for students who have not had much experience, it will also provide an
environment for writing development and improvement. Instruction will begin with word choice: learning to
avoid clichés, practicing a variety of sentence structures, and finally creating meaningful paragraphs including
descriptive and informative paragraphs as well as first-and third-person narratives. Students will practice
important techniques of style and self-editing and learn grammar through the writing process. Expect plenty
of interaction in the classroom, including group projects, discussion, and activities. Daily assignments will be
required at home to support lessons taught each week. Though carefully structured, this class will be flexible
enough to meet the needs of every learning style, challenge, and variety of skill level.


High School Composition 2
Age: 9th-11th grade
Time: Thursday, 10:00-10:50 a.m.—full year course—16 week semesters
Tuition: $100 semester—full year course—16 week/ semester
Supply fee: $15 1st semester (this fee includes any text that might be purchased) $10/2nd semester
Prerequisite: A previous formal composition class is required (Mrs. Blain’s Composition 1) or student must
submit a 5 paragraph essay with a thesis statement to me by May 5, for review.
Textbook: will be provided in supply fee (there is not one to purchase)
High School Composition 2 is a continuation of Composition 1. It is the next class in the four year
composition rotation. Students entering this class should be familiar and able to write a 5 paragraph essay in
MLA format. Students will be writing different types of essay—descriptive, persuasive, analogy, etc. Students
will learn how to write a literary analysis paper as well as a formal MLA research paper. They will learn the
entire research process and use that process to write a fabulous research paper ☺ We will begin learning
vocabulary for preparation in taking the ACT/SAT and utilize that vocabulary in essay writing. This class will
not be teaching formal grammar, but will learn grammar through the writing process.


Book Discussion I

Age: 7th-9th grade
Time: Thursday, 11:00-11:50
Tuition: $90 per semester—full year course—16 weeks/semester
Supply Fee: $10/semester
Textbook: no textbook…list of books will be available at co-op registration. Students will be required to have
a notebook with 8 dividers (one divider for each book)
Description: The goal of this class is to introduce 7th-9th graders to quality literary works. Students will read
three books each semester for a total of 6 books for the year. Students will participate in hands-on activities,
discussion and homework activities to explore literary elements of plot, characterization, theme, setting, etc.
Students will analyze each book and be able to explain literary elements for each book. We will be reading a
variety of books—a biography, suspense, historical fiction, humorous and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet
Students will keep a notebook with dividers which will hold all homework and classroom assignments. This
class will attempt to meet all learning styles and challenges. This will count as a literature credit for 9th
graders. Ninth graders will have additional work to complete. Some of the books we will be reading are The
Twenty-one Balloons, Number the Stars, Shadow of His Hand, Romeo and Juliet. A complete list of books will
be available prior to registration so that parents can preview the book list. Please preview the books so you
will know the content prior to your child reading the book in class.


Book Discussion 2
Age: 10th-12th grade
Time: 3:00-3:50, the second Monday of the month, 3 times a semester

Textbook: A complete book list will be available at registration.
Description: Reading Great Literature sharpens the mind, quickens the heart, and causes one to think beyond
their world. It will be our aim to ponder, discuss, present and apply what we learn to real life. Emphasis of this
class will be on critical thinking and the message of the work rather than vocabulary or chapter questions. An
assignment will be emailed one month prior to each discussion and will need to be completed before class.
We will be covering 6 complete works, three each semester. Included this year will be Fahrenheit 451 by Ray
Bradbury, My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok, The Twenty –One Balloons by William Pene du Bois, and Till
We Have Faces: A Myth Retold by C.S. Lewis


Foreign Language Classes

Middle School Latin II
Age: 6th-9th Grade
Day/Time: Thursday, 1:00-1:50 p.m.
Class Fee: $75 semester —full year course—16 weeks/semester

Prerequisite: Completion of Middle School Latin I OR approval by teacher
Textbook: Classical Academic Press Latin for Children, Primer B
Latin for Children B, History Reader
Latin for Children B, Activity Book
We will work through a 32-week text that will continue to teach students to Latin vocabulary, grammar,
English derivatives, and basic translation. The text includes daily practice, fun chants and games for review,
and age-appropriate lesson practice. We will work on some activities from the Activity Book in class and
translations from the History Reader will be done as weekly homework. We will also introduce Biblical and
church history as it applies to the lessons. Students will be expected to complete vocabulary cards on a
weekly basis.
Primer B is the second of three years available through Latin for Children. 2-3 years of this curriculum will
effectively prepare students for high school level language study.


High School Latin I
Age: 9th-11th

Students will learn the grammar, structure, and intermediate to advanced vocabulary of Latin. Activities
throughout the year will include group and individual translations, lecture and discussion, conversation,
English word derivatives, and review games. Students will be expected to make and review vocabulary cards
on a weekly basis (either by hand or on the computer). Toward the end of the year, we will introduce working
with the Vulgate translation of the Bible to prepare students for translation in Latin 2.


High School Latin II
Age: 8th-12th

Prerequisite: Completion of High School Latin I OR Middle School Latin 3

vocabulary cards on a weekly basis (either by hand or on the computer). All translation activities this year will
be taken directly from the Vulgate Bible in preparation for the translation and analysis that will be done in
High School Latin III. This class will count for both a foreign language credit and a Bible credit.

**Note: Students completing Middle School Latin 3 should enter this class rather than High School Latin I.


Spanish I
Age: 8th-12th grade
Time: Monday; 12:00-1:20 p.m.
Tuition: $100 per semester—full year course—16 weeks/semester

Description: This is an entry level Spanish class. The class assumes no knowledge of the language and begins
from the very beginning. The class will meet all qualifications for a High School language credit. Parents are
welcome to attend!


Spanish 2
Age: 9th-12th grade
Time: Monday: 1:30-2:50 p.m.
Tuition: $100/per semester-full year course-16 weeks/semester

Description: Spanish 2 picks up where Spanish 1 left off. It builds on the foundation of Spanish 1 and as such
successfully completing a Spanish 1 is a prerequisite.


American Sign Language I

Age: 8th -12th

An introduction to the culture and history of the Deaf community, guidelines, and practices of American Sign

required for some assignments.
NOTE: This class counts as the first year of a foreign language credit require for graduation.

High School Oklahoma History—semester 1
Time: Thursday; 9:00-9:50 a.m.—1st semester
Tuition: $100/semester (this is a one semester class) 16 weeks

Textbook: No textbook to purchase. I will put the textbooks together and have them copied.
This class will count for ½ unit of credit for the Oklahoma History requirement for graduation in the state of
Oklahoma. The class will be composed of a variety of teaching styles…hands-on maps, projects, lectures,
quizzes and special guest speakers. Students will be evaluated through projects, papers, class discussion and
quizzes. We will cover geography, Indian removal, Five Civilized Tribes, oil discovery, statehood, legislative
structure, and various other historical topics. We will also discuss how historical events are currently affecting
the state today; as well as current events and their effect on the future of Oklahoma.


High School Economics—semester 2
Age: 9th-12th grade
Time: Thursday; 9:00-9:50 a.m.—2nd semester
Tuition: $100/semester (this is a one semester class) 16 weeks
Supply Fee: $15
Textbook: No textbook to purchase—we will draw information from a variety of sources and I will put
together a copied textbook.
This class will count for ½ unit for Economics/Personal Finance requirement for graduation by the state of
Oklahoma. This class will cover basic economic theory, microeconomics, macroeconomics, current economic
developments, and personal finance. The class will be a combination of lecture, discussion and hands-on
activities. The personal finance portion will cover how to open a checking account, balance a checkbook,
simple investing, and budgeting. We will use the Biblical Economics as a base curriculum and pull in several
other books, etc. for the basis of the class.
If time permits, we will do a mini-market in which the students will create a product and buy/sell.


Science Classes

Students will learn the science basics and have an introduction to Chemistry and Physics. Students will cover topics such
as metric measurements, basic unit analysis, speed/acceleration, light, sound, simple machines and more. This class will
include labs. Supply Fee includes materials for labs, handouts, and all basic materials needed in class.
NOTE: Physical Science DOES COUNT as a high school lab science credit for college admission and is
accepted by Oklahoma colleges.


Biology
Grades: 10th-12th

The purpose of this class will be to give students a basic understanding of all life and how various systems of
creation work. Class topics will include: Botany, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Zoology, Cellular &
Molecular Biology, Creation, and the theory of Evolution (so that students can refute the world’s view with
God’s Word). Students will participate in this class through labs (including dissections), discussions, videos,
observation exercises, lectures, and homework assignments. Supply fee includes materials for labs, handouts,
and all basic materials needed in class


High School Electives


High School Overview of Music, Theatre, and Musical Theatre
Age: 9th-11th
Day/Time: Thursday; 1:00—1:50 p.m.
Class Fee: $100 semester —full year course—16 weeks/semester

Textbook: Text is not yet final – if needed will be provided
This class will be a combination of “in the trenches” and “Bravo!” Our first semester, students will follow the
path of music and theatre through history, focusing on major contributors to both genres, and their
accomplishments. Second semester will focus on Musical Theatre in America, and it’s reflection of our culture.
There will be four quarterly projects, chosen from a list by the student, according to each individual’s talents
ranging from computer presentations to live performances. The main focus of this course is to instill a love of
music and theatre, while learning the basics of each craft, and delving into our own talents!


Windows 2008 Server Administration
Age: 10th-12th grade
Time: <M,T, or TH> evenings, 6:00-8:30
Location: TBD (there may be a fee for classroom rental, depending on where we meet; it will be somewhere
in Broken Arrow or SE Tulsa)
Tuition: $175 per semester – full year course—16 weeks/semester
Textbook: TBD – Will likely cost about $40
Laptop Required: You will need a laptop with at least 2 GB of RAM (unless you want to lug your desktop and
monitor in every night). You will also need at least 70 GB free on your hard drive.
Class size: 5 -12 (We need a minimum of 5 to have the class).
Description: The goal of this course is to provide students with entry-level skills necessary to install, configure,
and maintain a Windows 2008 Server network. We will cover managing user accounts, Active Directory, DNS,
DHCP, group policy, folder and printer sharing, and much more. At the end of the course you should be able
to set up and manage a Windows 2008 Server network. The class will include a mix of lecture, demonstration,
and hands-on labs to practice what you are learning. (You will use virtual servers set up on your laptop for
practice.)
*Note: Ron Harrington has taught technical courses on Microsoft Server for several years at professional
training centers and has fifteen years’ experience in the field. A 30-hour course on Windows Server 2008 at a
professional training center typically costs $2000-$2500

All CHEER members are welcome to enroll their school-age children in a variety of classes held 8-16 weeks in the Fall and Spring semesters.
